Addiction Treatment Center: What To Expect As A Patient

August 10, 2021

Getting checked into an addiction treatment center for inpatient treatment can be overwhelming for any patient. Such a major transition can be prepared for by knowing what to expect as a patient.

This allows the patient to mentally prepare before the actual transition happens. This also removes any anxiety or apprehension they may have related to getting checked into an addiction treatment center by knowing that there’s nothing to be scared of.

What Is Inpatient Rehab?

This is also known as residential rehab in which the patient stays inside the premises for the first segment of their recovery process. They are isolated from possible triggers and are discouraged to leave. All of the attention is on how the patient can fully recover and gain independence from their addictions.

Inpatient treatment usually involves detoxification (the complete removal of all traces of foreign substances from the body) as well as residential care (tending to all physical, mental, and emotional needs of the patient.)

What To Expect During Treatment

Detox

This is the first phase of any addiction treatment. This is the main difference between inpatient and outpatient rehab, and it is also said to be the difference that boosts the effectiveness of various treatment plans.

Completely eliminating the foreign substance is the first step to make the body regain independence. However, some serious cases of addiction have more challenging detoxification processes. Some patients experience extreme withdrawal symptoms like shivering, fever, nausea, aches and pains, and other related things.

That’s why it’s best to do the detox process in an addiction treatment center where the patient will be surrounded by expert healthcare workers to monitor their vital signs, mediate their symptoms, and nurse them to recovery. The 24-hour health surveillance ensures that the victim won’t be harmed.

Transition To Residential Treatment

After successful detoxification, the patient will be prepared for residential treatment where they will rejoin society. There are numerous therapeutic methods that are employed, usually depending on the needs of the patient.

You can expect to work closely with a primary therapist where your psychological and mental issues will be explored so as to target the root cause or to reach a more robust level of mental and emotional health or mindset and belief system than before. The patient will be coached to have the mental tools that will help them beat their addiction and have a defense against relapse when urges arise.

The patient will also be taught how to deal with addiction so that they can maintain long-term and sustained recovery.

Holistic Approaches

These are non-invasive methods that can help remedy any type of addiction. Holistic approaches are usually preferred because of little to no side effects. Holistic treatments also better target the patient’s physical and psychological needs.

Some of the most common holistic approaches include meditation, nutritional approaches, and more.

The main reason why holistic approaches are so effective is that they make the patient feel relaxed. It puts the patient in a better mental state so that he can better combat their addiction. This also improves his productivity and response to other treatments.

Overall, the client’s life is taken into a multi-dimensional approach that helps coordinate the treatments from various professionals. This includes trying to find solutions for all aspects of the patient’s life, from legal issues to relationship problems and even housing matters.

Recreational Activities

Recreational therapy is the involvement of leisure activities in the patient’s daily schedule. There are numerous pieces of evidence that prove this to be effective in combating addiction.

These recreational activities help distract the patient and these also improve their physical and mental strengths. These recreational activities may include wholesome activities like yoga, volleyball, nature hiking, sports, fitness classes, meditation, art therapy, animal therapy, music, and more.

The way this works is that it allows the patient to explore themself again and to get out of the addiction rabbit hole by gaining a new perspective and finding something healthy to be passionate about. These activities also reduce stress so that the patient will feel more relaxed and less susceptible to a relapse.

These recreational activities pave the way towards emotional healing for a sustainable recovery. These activities allow the patient to try new things without fear of failure, connecting with other people, becoming more comfortable with asking for help when necessary, boosting the patient’s confidence, and more.

A Safe And Comfortable Environment

Our patients can rest assured that our facility is small and personal. Our center is safe and comfortable as those are necessary grounds to help a patient recover. It’s important to keep the patient feeling at ease so that they will be more receptive to the treatment.

These addiction treatment centers are also armed with professionals who know exactly what they need to do to help a patient attain recovery. These centers also have top-level amenities and facilities that are aimed towards self-improvement. There are even support groups that allow patients to connect with fellow patients. They can share their experiences and this sense of community is particularly useful because it makes the patient feel less alone as well as be a part of something positive that perpetuates continual self-improvement and offers support ideally far beyond the end of treatment. Involvement in community support groups should be continued and utilized in the patient’s life to come.

Obviously, not all of the work rests on the addiction treatment center, patients also have responsibility. Our staff partner with the patient and walk alongside them to help them to achieve their goals. They should keep an open mind so that they will be more receptive and less resistant to treatment modalities, hence improving the chances of recovery.

Our addiction treatment center promotes a structured living environment that fosters accountability. There are plenty of safety and supervision protocols so you can rest assured that the patients are in good hands at all times. The environment is structured for relapse prevention and limits impulsive behaviors.

How Long Does This Usually Take?

Making recovery a priority and committing to a serious effort to focus on what’s truly important is ideal to make a real change. Nothing changes if nothing changes. In treatment, what you put in affects what you get out. We do not believe that there is a one size fits all rule to how long a patient should make use of our support. We treat people on an individual basis and take into consideration that they have a unique history and needs.  Length of stay can be related to the severity of addiction and contributing factors. Severe cases often need more time to recover so they will be enrolled in long-term care. This also helps to ensure that there will be no recurring addiction.

The patients are subjected to a regular testing schedule so that their progress can be quantified. Adjustments to the treatment will also be made depending on the results of these tests, which further affects the overall timeline.
